Box Score
The Misericordia University team battled the elements to earn a 1-0 road-victory over Freedom Conference rival, Wilkes University on Wednesday night.

Rob Wiacek scored the only goal of the match, beating the keeper to the left post on a penalty in the 50th minute.

Wiacek earned the penalty kick after Nick vonEgypt was pulled down in the box by a Wilkes defender.

The Cougars had numerous chances with the first coming when Nick Rogers clanked the left post with a shot with 27 minutes left in the opening half.

vonEgypt then had a terrific shot from just outside the box on a direct kick following a Wilkes penalty, but the Colonels keeper came up with the leaping save.

Chris Panagacos then joined the shot parade firing a ball from beyond 30 yards that nearly trickled off the keeper's hands and in the net midway through the second half.

The Colonels earned a penalty kick of their own when Barry Fitzgerald got tangled up with Eric McAnena just inside the box. McAnena's penalty kick clanked off the football field goal post to keep the Cougars' lead at 1-0 with 6:40 left in the game.

Matt Norcini and Chris Edkins added scoring chances late in the game, but one goal proved to be enough as the Cougars walked away with the 1-0 victory.

Fitzgerald picked up five saves to earn the shutout for the Cougars.

With the win, MU improves to 10-5-2, including a 4-1 mark in the Freedom Conference, while Wilkes falls to 4-13 and 2-3 in the conference.

The Cougars return to action Saturday afternoon at 5:30 against FDU-Florham at Mangelsdorf Field.
