Box Score The Misericordia University men's soccer team finished their regular season strong with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at DeSales on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon.
Rob Wiacek had yet another game-winning goal for the Cougars, his fourth goal in as many games, while
Niko Amity had the other goal.
Chris Edkins and
Derek Antonini each had an assist in the victory over the Bulldogs.
Neither team had any great scoring chances in the first half, but the Cougars came out on a mission in the second half. MU's offense provided an abundance of pressure throughout the second half.
Nick vonEgypt had the first scoring chance of the game, going one-on-one with the DeSales keeper, but the keeper made a great save.
The Cougars had another chance shortly after, but the shot was tipped over the crossbar.
However, it was the Bulldogs that struck first whenJoey Malvestuto ripped a shot into the top left corner of the net to give DeSales a 1-0 advantage in the 61
st minute.
MU's offense continued to apply the pressure and it was only a matter of time before the Cougars would find the back of the net.
Amity tied the game at 1-1 in the 73
rd minute after collecting a loose ball and hammered a shot off of a DeSales defender that went up and over the keeper.
Just over four minutes later, in the 77
th minute, MU played a ball out wide to Antonini who then flicked it thru to Wiacek who finished the play with a great left-footed goal.
The goal gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead and eventually the victory.
MU also received great efforts from
Nick Rogers,
Trey Ziegler and
Barry Kabinoff.
The Cougars dominated the attack, earning a 17-5 advantage in shots and 9-2 advantage in corners.
With the win, MU finishes its regular season 12-5-2 and 6-1 in the Freedom while the Bulldogs fall to 7-11-1 and 2-5 in the conference.
The Cougars begin their postseason Tuesday night at 7:00 when they host King's in a Freedom Conference semifinal match at Mangelsdorf Field.
