Cougars Battle to Win at Widener

Box Score Led by tournament MVP Jacob Battle, the Misericordia University men's basketball team knocked off host Widener, 62-53, to win the Autism Awareness Tip-Off Tournament, Sunday afternoon in Chester.

Steve Ware and Erik Kerns wee also named to the All-Tournament team.

Battle made five three-pointers to tie for the team-high with 15 points.  Ware added 15 points and Joe Busacca had 10 points.

Kerns had six points and tied for the team lead with seven rebounds with Griffin Sponaugle.

Battle, Ware and Kerns combined for 41 points off the bench for MU.

After Widener scored to open the second half to tie the score, 28-28, Sponaugle hit a jumper in the lane and the Cougars never trailed the rest of the way.

Battle hit back-to-back three-pointers to give MU a 42-35 lead with 11:31 to play.

Each time the Pride cut into the MU lead, Battle responded with a three-pointer, including one with 6:55 remaining to give the Cougars a 52-44 lead.

Battle drained another three to put MU in front, 55-47, with 4:50 to go.

Widener cut the deficit to four, 55-51, with 2:19 to play, but Ware answered with two free throws.

Up four with 1:51 to go, Ware, Sponaugle and Busacca combined for seven free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Misericordia, 2-0, will host Scranton, Wednesday at 7:00.
