Box Score The Misericordia University women's basketball team rallied late, but dropped a tough 77-74 decision to Worchester State on Saturday afternoon at the Williams Tournament in Williamstown, MA.
Shelby Brochetti led the Cougars with 20 points , including a perfect 6-6 mark from the free-throw line.
Sam Baro, who was named to the all-tournament team, added 14 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Lauren Smicherko was the third player in double figures for MU with 13 points and three assists.
Nikki Baro added seven points,
Justine Seely added six points and
Jaclyn Hajec finished with nine boards and four points in the loss.
Brochetti and Smicherko got off to a quick start for the Cougars while Hajec capped the opening run, giving MU its largest lead of the game at 26-14 with 11:10 left in the first half.
Worchester State fought back, cutting the MU lead to just 37-30 at the half.
The Lancers opened the second half on a tear, taking a lead as big as 13 midway through the half.
The Cougars clawed their way back into the game in the final 10 minutes. Smicherko and Brochetti added back-to-back three-point plays, sparking an 11-0 Cougars run that brought them to within 54-52. Seely and
Nikki Baro were also added buckets in MU's late rally.
The two teams traded buckets and the lead for the next few minutes. But, it would be the Lancers who took the lead for good in the game's final minutes.
Brochetti added a three at the buzzer, but it wouldn't be enough, as the Lancers went 4-4 from the charity stripe late in the game to secure the 77-74 victory.
MU returns to action Tuesday night at Lycoming.
