Box Score The Misericordia University women's basketball dropped a tough 56-55 decision to visiting, Drew University, Thursday afternoon in the Anderson Center.
Justine Seely had a huge block with 12 seconds left in the game and
Shelby Brochetti gathered the loose ball, prompting MU head coach
Allison Kern to call a full timeout to set up the game's final seven seconds. The Cougars' got a good look, but the shot at the buzzer clanked the rim and Drew hung on for the 56-55 victory.
Seely had her best game of the season, posting 23 points and ripping down 17 boards en route to her fourth double-double of the season. She also added four blocks and one steal. Brochetti followed with nine points and eight rebounds while
Jaclyn Hajec added eight points.
The Rangers led by as many as 11 points with 7:15 left in the game. However, Seely took over late in the game. The sophomore started MU's big run with a layup at the 6:30 mark then knocked down two free throws and added another layup to bring MU to within 51-46 at the six minute mark.
Seely wasn't done. She came up with a defensive rebound and added added a layup on the other end. She then blocked a shot on Drew's following possession which led to another layup and MU was within 51-48 with 5:07 left to play.
She continued her strong second half, adding a layup, two free-throws and jumper to bring the Cougars to within one at 54-43 with 2:06 left. However, Ryan Jackson answered with a jumper, following a Drew timeout to extend the lead to 56-53 with 1:33 left.
Nikki Baro knocked down two free throws with 41 seconds left to bring MU to within one yet again, however Drew hung on for the 56-55 victory.
The two teams played a fairly even first half, with the lead changing hands four times. Hajec connected from beyond the arc to bring MU within 32-28 at the half.
MU dominated in the paint, outscoring the Rangers 22-8. The Cougars' bench also outscored Drew's bench 13-2 in the loss.
With the loss MU falls to 0-9 on the season while Drew improved to 6-2.
The Cougars close return to action Saturday afternoon at 1:00 agains Marywood in the Anderson Center.
