Box Score The Misericordia University men's basketball team used a big second half to close out its home schedule with an impressive 78-63 win over King's to clinch a Freedom Conference post-season berth, Tuesday night at the Anderson Center.
Steve Ware led MU with 26 points and
Matt Greene added 21 points on Senior Appreciation Night as the Cougars improved to 14-10 overall and into sole possession of second place in the Freedom at 8-5.
Joe Busacca and
Erik Kerns added 10 points for MU.
Ware added a game-high eight rebounds to go along with five steals and three blocked shots.
After a fast-paced first half that ended in a 37-37 tie, Greene gave the Cougars the lead for a good with a three-pointer off a screen to open the second half.
With MU up 48-47, Greene drilled back-to-back three-pointers for a 54-47 lead at 13:21.
Busacca found Ware underneath for a layup and a 60-49 advantage with 10:36 to play.
After a King's bucket, Kerns broke a three-minute scoreless drought on a layup off a no-look pass from Greene with 7:00 to go.
Ware followed with a drive and a dish to Kerns for a layup and Ware converted a steal into a pair of free throws at the other end for a 66-53 lead with 3:37 remaining.
Greene buried his sixth three-pointer and added two free throws to give MU a 71-55 lead with just under three minutes to play.
After King's scored six straight points to take an 8-5 lead in the opening five minutes of the game, Greene tied with a three-pointer from the top of the key and put MU in front with another trey from the left wing.
Cael Evans backed into the lane and hit a short turnaround jumper for a 14-11 lead and Kerns' layup put MU ahead 17-13 midway through the first half.
With King's leading 26-22 with 6:18 to play, Kerns hit two free throws and Ware added four more to pull MU within 29-28 at 4:27.
Ware hit a 15-foot jumper to give Misericordia the lead and
Griffin Sponaugle found Pat Widdoss underneath for a 32-29 lead.
Busacca buried a three-pointer from the right wing with one minute to play and King's answered with a three-pointer on their final possession to tie it, 37-37.
Misericordia will wrap up the regular season at Manhattanville, Saturday, with a chance to clinch second place and a first round Freedom Conference home game.
