8/29/2014 9:52:00 PM

Box Score The Misericordia University women's soccer team opened its 2014 season with a 2-0 victory over Cortland on Friday night at Mangelsdorf Field.

The Cougars controlled the pace for the majority of the game, outshooting the Red Dragons 14-3 and played stellar defensively en route to the shutout win.

Meghan Antrim put the Cougars on the board at the 21:35 mark, finishing a beautiful cross from Kylen Smith. Antrim's first of the season gave the Cougars a 1-0 advantage and proved to be the eventual game winner.

Last season's Freedom Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Megan Mahoney, added the Cougars second goal at the 67:48 mark on a magnificent pass from Alex Gallagher.

The Cougars continued to dominate the pace of the game and when Cortland did find their way towards the net, Maureen Ciccosanti shut them down. The Cougar's keeper had two stellar saves on very good Red Dragon chances. She finished the game with three total saves.

Offensively, Erin McGreal and Megan Lannigan had two shots on goal while Gallagher had one.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 1-0 on the season and will travel to Lebanon Valley on Wednesday afternoon, before hosting Gettysburg at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
