Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hawk, Busacca Lead MU Past FDU-Florham

The Misericordia University men's basketball team survived a second-half rally and extended its winning streak to eight games with a 72-69 overtime win at FDU-Florham, Saturday.

James Hawk turned in a dominant effort with 27 points, 21 rebounds and a school-record eight blocked shots.  Hawk set the single-season blocks record as well with his 35th of the season.

Joe Busacca added 14 points, including the 1,000th of his career.

Jesse Urich had 10 points and Griffin Sponaugle had five assists as the Cougars improved to 15-4 overall and 7-1 in the Freedom Conference.

The Cougars led throughout the first half and held a 42-33 lead with less 12 minutes remaining in the game.

The Devils charged back with a 12-2 run over a four-minute span to take 45-44 lead.

FDU-Florham eventually took a 54-49 lead with 4:37 to go, but Hawk had consecutive layups to pull MU within a point at 2:37.

After an FDU score, Urich drained a three-pointer to tie it with 2:07 left.

Busacca career point as he ended a two-minute scoring drought to put MU ahead with a jumper with 14 seconds to play.

The Devils tied it with a layup with two seconds to go, but were unable to convert the potential game-winning three-point play as the free throw was off the mark.

Erik Kerns put the Cougars ahead with a free throw early in overtime and MU never trailed in the extra session.

Hawk's layup and Busacca's 1,000th-point jumper made it 63-58 and Urich sank a free throw to give the Cougars a six-point lead with 2:33 to play.

Urich, Kerns and Hawk combined for five free throws over the final 34 seconds to secure the win.

Misericordia will host DeSales, Wednesday.
