Griffin Sponaugle scored 15 points in a six-minute span in the second half to lead the Misericordia University men's basketball team to a 71-68 come-from-behind win over Arcadia, Monday night at the Anderson Center.
Steve Ware had a double-double while leading the Cougars with 19 points and 10 rebounds and Sponaugle added 18 points while
Joe Busacca had 14 points and six assists.
Sponaugle broke a 42-42 tie with a three-pointer with 10:41 to play and drained four more shots from behind the arc, including three straight possessions, to give the Cougars a 61-53 lead with 4:59 to go.
MU shot 53.3% from three-point range, led by Sponaugle's 6-9 performance.
After falling behind 12-2 to open the game, the Cougars rallied to pull within three points, 29-26, at halftime.
After Ware scored three straight baskets for the Cougars, Sponaugle hit a deep three-pointer from the right wing to cut the deficit to 25-20 with 4:48 remaining in the first half.
Ware drove around a defender along the baseline and Busacca added a pair of free throws with 1:02 to go to close out the first half scoring.
Down 31-28, Busacca scored four straight points and
James Hawk converted a nice feed from Ware to give MU its first lead of the game, 32-31, just three minutes into the second half.
Jamie Egan buried a three-pointer from the left wing and finished a fast break feed from Busacca to stretch the lead to put MU up, 41-38, with 12:14 to play.
Arcadia pulled even, 42-42, with 11:17 remaining to set the stage for Sponaugle's three-point barrage.
After the Knights regained the lead, 47-45, Sponaugle put MU in front for good with a three-pointer from the right wing.
Ware scored on three straight trips to give the Cougars a 67-60 lead with 1:30 left, but the Knights charged back to within a point, 67-66, with :47 to play.
Busacca answered with a driving layup to beat the shot clock and
Jesse Urich made it 71-66 with a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left.
Misericordia improved to 9-4 and will open Freedom Conference play against Wilkes next week.
