David Malaquias scored the game's only goal to lead the Misericordia University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win at King's in a key MAC Freedom match.
After a near-miss on a
Niko Amity corner kick when King's GK Owen Geedey tipped the ball over the crossbar, the Cougars got on the board in the 31
st minute.
Malaquias headed home a long throw-in from
Evan Brown and
Matt Smith and the MU defense did the rest.
Smith made two saves to earn his third shutout in just three collegiate starts while the MU defense limited King's to eight shots and just three on goal.
Malaquias nearly added a second goal 10 minutes after his first tally, but his header was cleared by the King's defense.
Derek Antonini had another solid performance winning balls in the air and the back four of Brown,
Kevin Matlon,
George Stock and
Vincenzo Diliberti kept King's out of the back of the net.
The Monarchs had a chance to tie the score in the closing minutes, but an MU defender cleared a shot in the 88
th minute.
MU moved to 7-5-2 overall and into a tie with King's for second place in the MAC Freedom at 3-1-1.
Misericordia will visit FDU-Florham, Saturday.
