Lyco Men Rally Past MU

The Lycoming men's basketball team rallied over the final five minutes to beat Misericordia, 86-78, in the championship game of the Dutch Burch Invitational, Saturday in Williamsport.
 
Misericordia led 64-63 with 5:08 to play, but the Warriors went on a 13-0 run over the next three minutes to take 76-64 lead with less than two minutes to play.
 
Griffin Sponaugle led the Cougars in scoring for the second straight night with 22 points on 7-8 shooting, including 6-7 from three-point range.
 
Jason Kenny had 21 points and Erik Kerns recorded his second consecutive double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  James Hawk had seven points, six rebounds and four blocked shots.
 
Sponaugle and Kerns were both named to the All-Tournament team.
 
Tied 40-40 at halftime, the Cougars opened the second half on an 11-0 run over the first four minutes to take a 51-40 lead.
 
Lycoming came back with nine straight points before Sponaugle and Kenny both hit three-pointers for a 57-49 lead with 10:30 remaining.
 
Sponaugle hit another three-pointer for a 60-50 lead, but Lycoming went on another 9-0 run to get within 60-59 with 7:44 to go.
 
Tied, 63-63, Kerns made a free throw to give MU its last lead before the Warriors rattled off 13 unanswered points.
 
Lycoming opened a 16-7 lead in the first four minutes of the game, but the Cougars charged back over the next eight minutes to take the lead.
 
Michael Brunson hit a three and Kenny's layup cut the deficit to 24-22 with 9:17 left in the first half.
 
Hawk tied it with two free throws and Kerns put MU ahead, 26-24, with two more free throws.
 
Sponaugle drained back-to-back three-pointers for a 32-26 lead with 6:13 remaining.
 
Kenny scored five straight points and Hawk added a free throw for a 40-35 lead, but the Warriors closed the half with five points in the final 38 seconds to it at halftime.
 
Misericordia will host Susquehanna in its home opener, Tuesday.
