Veneziale Lifts MU to Sweep at Wilkes

Andi Veneziale hit two homers in the nightcap as the Misericordia University softball team rallied for a pair of wins to sweep Wilkes, 5-4, 4-3, in their Freedom Conference opener, Monday.

The Cougars scored twice in the top of the seventh to win the opener and scored twice in the top of the sixth to take the nightcap.

Lori Brennan had two hits and two RBI in the opener and Megan Hardy had two hits.  Hardy, Kristi Seiler and Melanie Quintanilla had RBI-doubles and Alissa Steier scattered five hits to earn the win.

In the nightcap, Andi Veneziale drove in three runs with a pair of homers and Quintanilla and Hardy had two hits each.

Maddie Stebich scattered six hits to pick up the win.

Whitney Ellenberg led off the opener with a walk and moved to third on Sam Hare's one-out single to left.  Seiler doubled to right center to get MU on the board and Hardy lined a double to left field to make it 2-0.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the first, Wilkes put two runners on via a walk and hit batter before Lacey Bixler lined a two-out homer to right field to give the Colonels a 3-2 lead.

Ellenberg singled to left with two outs in the second and moved up on a passed ball before Quintanilla doubled to left to tie the score, 3-3.

Wilkes went ahead in the bottom of the frame and the score stood until the seventh.

Hare drew a one-out walk and moved to third on Hardy's two-out single through the left side.  Melissa Parker drew a walk to load the bases and Brennan drove in two runs with a single down the right field line.

Steier set the Colonels down in order in the seventh to end the game.

In game two, the Cougars struck in the top of the first when Quintanilla doubled to right field and came around on Seiler's two-out double down the right field line.

After Wilkes went ahead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, Veneziale tied it with a two-out solo homer to center in the top of the second.

The Colonels went back on top in the bottom of the second and led through the fifth inning.

Hardy singled to left to open the MU sixth and Veneziale drilled a two-out, two-run homer to left field to give the Cougars a 4-3 lead.

MU, 7-7 (2-0 Freedom), will travel to DeSales, Tuesday.
