Seniors
Sam Hare and
Kristi Seiler roped back-to-back home runs to force extra innings in game two of doubleheader with Eastern. However, Eastern scored two runs in the top of the eighth to complete the sweep over the Cougars on Senior Appreciation Day at Anderson Field.
MU dropped the first game 7-1 and then fell 8-6 in extra innings in game two.
Seiler drove in the Cougars' lone run in the first game while
Andi Veneziale, Hare and
Melanie Quintanilla added one hit each in the loss.
Jordan Hoffman allowed just one unearned run in four innings of relief in game one.
Eastern got out to a quick start in the opener, scoring two runs in the first, third and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead.
MU got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Quintanilla roped a one-out double off the left field fence and Hare singled up the middle, giving MU runners on second and third. Seiler then bounced a ground ball to the right side, allowing Quintanilla to trot in from third, cutting the Eagles' lead to 6-1 after four innings.
The Eagles extended their lead to 7-1 with one run in the top of the seventh.
MU threatened in the home half. Hardy led off the inning with a walk,
Melissa Parker added a single and
Kayla Stephani drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out. However, the Eagles got out of the jam, capturing a 7-1 victory in game one.
Hare led the MU offense in game two with a home run and four RBI while Seiler added a home run and Ellenberg had three hits and one RBI.
Eastern again got out to a quick start in the second game, scoring five runs in the top of the second to take a 5-0 lead.
MU chipped away at the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third.
Mackenzie Yurko reached on an error to lead off the inning and
Cailey Ware followed with a single to left field to give MU runners on second and third with one out.
Ellenberg followed with a line drive that went off the shortstop's glove and into left field, allowing Yurko to score from third. Quintanilla followed with an RBI single up the middle, cutting the Cougars' deficit to 6-2 after three innings.
Hare and Seiler then crushed back-to-back homers to tie the game at 6-6 with two outs in the home half of the seventh, forcing extra innings.
MU falls to 17-11 overall and 9-3 in the Freedom Conference. Eastern improves to 11-17 overall and 9-3 in the conference.
The Cougars return to action Sunday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader against Penn College at 12:00.Â
