Solid Pitching Leads MU to Sweep at Scranton

The Misericordia University softball team swept a doubleheader at the University of Scranton on Monday night.

MU picked up a 3-2 victory in nine innings in the first game and then a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.

Melanie Quintanilla led the Cougars with two hits in the opener while Whitney Ellenberg and Lori Brennan drove in one run each.

Alissa Steier was terrific, tossing all nine innings, allowing no earned runs while striking out seven to improve to 7-7 on the season.

Megan Hardy powered MU to a victory with a two-run blast in the nightcap while Kristi Seiler also drove in a run in the victory.

Maddie Steibich was magnificent with a complete game in the circle, allowing just one run while striking out four, improving to 4-1 on the season.

In the first game, neither team plated a run until MU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth. Andi Veneziale was placed on second base to start the inning. Cailey Ware bunted her over to third. Ellenberg then hit a ground ball to second base and the second baseman threw it away, allowing Veneziale to score from third.

The Royals got one back on a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth, sending the game to the ninth inning.

Kristi Seiler was placed on second to start the top of the ninth and later scored on a ground ball to second off the bat of Lori Brennan. Victoria Ciszak then scored on a wild pitch to give MU a 3-1 lead.

The Royals picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars held on for the 3-2 victory.

In the nightcap, Hardy gave the Cougars the only two runs they would need with a two-run blast in the top of the fourth.

MU picked up its final run of the game when Seiler's fielder's choice allowed Ellenberg to score from third, extending the Cougars' lead to 3-1.

Neither team plated a run in the final innings and MU escaped with the 3-1 victory in the finale.

With the sweep, MU improves to 12-8. The Royals fall to 6-6 on the season.

The Cougars return to action Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 for a doubleheader against Penn College at Anderson Field.
