The Misericordia University baseball team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker against top-seeded DeSales in the first game of championship Saturday at Owls Field in West Lawn, PA.
Â
The Cougars and Bulldogs will play again Saturday at 3:00 to determine the Freedom Conference Champion.
Despite being credited with the loss,
Garrett Pelko was terrific for the Cougars, allowing just one unearned run in a complete game effort. The lefty picked up three strikeouts and allowed just three hits.
The Cougars' pitching staff hasn't allowed an earned run through 27 innings and each starter has went the distance.
Â
Chris Boroch,
Kyle Lindsay and
D.J. Navoczynski had MU's only three hits in the loss.
Â
MU's best chance to plate a run came in the bottom of the seventh. Navoczynski led off the inning with a double down the left field line.
Ben Ciraolo then pinch hit for
Steve Cuccio and placed a perfect sacrifice bunt down the third base line, allowing Navoczynski to advance to third on the play. The Cougars then attempted a hit and run with one out and the Bulldogs executed the play perfectly, earning a strikeout and catching Navoczynski trying to score.
Â
The Bulldogs picked up their unearned run in the top of the ninth. Jesse Smoot led off the inning with a single up the middle and then stole second and took third when the throw went into centerfield. Pelko then worked two straight groundouts, however the Bulldogs picked up their lone run of the game on a fielding error in the next at bat.Â
Â
With the loss, MU falls to 28-11. DeSales improves to 28-16.
