The Delaware Valley University football team used big second and fourth quarters to defeat Misericordia University, 28-7, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
MU's
Jeff Puckett had more than 300 yards in total offense, including a school single-game record 227 yards passing, and
Mark McMaster had 99 yards receiving.
Ryan Kurtz had 55 yards on the ground and 72 yards through the air, including a 22-yard touchdown grab in the fourth quarter.
Hunter Pates led the MU defense with 14 tackles.
The Cougars moved deep into Del Val territory on each of its first three possessions, but came up empty thanks to a missed field goal, fumble and failed fourth down conversion.
MU took the opening kickoff and marched 64 yards while consuming nearly six minutes of clock.
Kurtz had a reception and a rush for a first down at the 35 and an out to McMaster went for 17 yards and a first down across midfield.
McMaster went across the middle for eight yards for a third down conversion to the Aggies 37 and Kurtz raced around left end for 14 yards and a first down at the 23.
Kurtz took a quick out down the left sideline to the 12 yard line, but the Del Val defense stiffened and MU settled for a 30-yard field goal attempt.
The Aggies moved into MU territory and eventually were stopped on fourth-and-six by Pates and
Kevin Bagasevich for a one-yard gain.
The Cougars put together another time consuming drive and moved deep into Del Val territory.
Kurtz broke a tackle and went up the middle for 12 yards and then gained eight yards on a pass in the right flat for a first down at the DVU 38.
On second down, Puckett shook a tackle and went up the middle for another first down at the 28.
Puckett bounced a draw play outside and went for 11 yards to convert a third-and-nine to the Del Val 16.
Puckett went for seven yards to the Del Val on the final play of the first quarter, but the Aggies forced a fumble on the first play of the second quarter and took over on their own 12.
After forcing an Aggies punt, the Cougars took over on their own 37 with 12:54 left in the second quarter.
On third-and-nine
Mark Rainey took a short pass and went 32 yards for a first down at the Del Val 30.
A holding penalty backed the Cougars up and Del Val eventually took over on downs at their own 25 with 9:16 to play in the second quarter.
The Aggies went 75 yards on eight plays to take a 7-0 lead with 5:37 to go.
MU was forced to punt on the ensuing possession and the Aggies struck quickly with a 57-yard TD scamper on second down for a 14-0 lead.
The Aggies took the second-half kickoff and went 79 yards to the MU one yard line, but were turned away when Bagasevich blocked a short field goal attempt.
Pates and the MU defense stopped a fourth-and-one attempt and the Cougars took over their own 37 near the end of the third quarter.
Puckett went 12 yards for a first down across midfield and hit Kurtz for 19 yards to the Aggies 28.
The Aggies picked up a sack on fourth down and regained possession on their own 35 and moved 65 yards to take a 21-0 lead with 7:55 remaining.
Puckett and Rainey combined for 19 yards on two runs to move into Del Val territory and Puckett rambled 12 yards to the Aggies 32.
A pass interference penalty moved the ball to the 22 and Kurtz went the rest of the way on a pass down the right sideline to get MU within 21-7 with 6:06 remaining.
Del Val handled the onside kick and went 46 yards in eight plays to go up 28-7 with 4:26 remaining.
MU, 0-3 (0-2 MAC), will travel to Stevenson, Saturday.
