The Misericordia University women's basketball dropped a hard-fought 63-57 non-conference decision at Geneseo, Saturday evening.
Justine Seely led MU with 21 points, 10 rebounds and four steals and
Leanne Forsyth added 10 points and five assists.
The six-point final margin was the largest lead of the game for either team. Tied 47-47 after three quarters, Geneseo scored to open the final period and led the rest of the way.
Down 56-51 with 4:41 to go,
Rachel Carmody made two free throws and Seely followed with a layup to get MU within one with 3:04 left.
Geneseo went back up by five, but Carmody answered with a jumper to make it 60-57 with 1:07 remaining, but MU didn't score again.
The game was back-and-forth from the beginning with the Cougars taking their first lead, 7-6, on five straight points by Seely early in the first quarter.
Jackie Hajec sandwiched a pair of layups around a Forsyth jumper to put MU ahead, 15-14, late in the first period, but Geneseo rallied to take an 18-15 lead after the opening quarter.
Trailing 27-21, the Cougars scored eight straight points to take a 29-27 lead with 4:11 left in the second quarter.
Japriya Carroll started the run with a pair of free throws and Seely converted a fast break layup.
Carmody's layup tied it and Seely made two free throws to put the Cougars in front.
Seely and
Shannon Croasdale both added layups as the Cougars took a 35-31 lead with under a minute remaining.
Seely made two free throws to give the Cougars their final lead, 43-42, with 3:19 to go in the third period and teams ended the quarter tied, 47-47.
MU will travel to Division I Binghamton, Monday.
