Kenny Leads MU Men to Win at King's

Jason Kenny did it again.

The first-year guard set a new career-high with 33 points to lead the Misericordia University men's basketball team to a thrilling 91-88 overtime win at King's, Wednesday.

Despite spending the second half in foul trouble, Kenny led four MU players in double figures and had a team-high six assists.  Erik Kerns had 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds and James Hawk added 11 points.

Griffin Sponaugle had 10 points and Alec Rodway added nine as the Cougars had 10 players dent the scoring column.

Tied 85-85, Rodway picked up a steal that led to two a pair of free throws by Kenny to put MU ahead for good, 87-85, with 1:15 remaining in overtime.

After two free throws by King's, Kerns sank a jumper to give the Cougars an 89-86 lead with :36 to play. 

King's made two free throws to get within a point, but Kenny answered with two foul shots for a 91-88 lead and the Monarchs missed two chances to tie in the closing seconds.

Down 66-58 with 8:19 remaining in regulation, Kenny scored eight straight points to pull MU even, 66-66.

Tyler McGarry drilled a three-pointer to give the Cougars a 69-68 lead with 5:25 to go.

After King's rallied to take a 72-69 lead, Kerns answered with a jumper and Kenny put MU back in front, 74-72, with a three-pointer with 3:18 left in regulation.

Tied 74-74, Hawk re-entered the game and gave MU a 76-74 lead with a layup with 2:38 to play.

Trailing 77-76 after a Monarchs' three-pointer, MU regained the lead on a Kenny layup with 1:06 to go.

King's went up, 80-78, but Kenny tied it again with two free throws with 13 seconds remaining and the Monarchs missed a potential game-winner in the final seconds of regulation.

MU jumped in front in OT on a Sponaugle three-pointer and the Monarchs responded with two free throws.

With four Cougars playing with four fouls with nearly four minutes remaining, Hawk extended the lead to 85-82 with layup.

The Cougars scored the game's first four points, but King's rallied to go up 15-9, with 12:27 left in the first half.

Kerns' three-pointer and a Rodway layup put MU ahead, 29-28, with 4:21 to go in the first half.

King's answered with an 8-0 run to take a 38-31 lead, but Kenny scored six straight points to pull the Cougars with 38-37.  King's added a pair of free throws and led 40-37 at halftime.

Misericordia shot blistering 65% (13-20) from the floor in the first half while getting points from eight different players.

Three MU starters spent time on the bench in the first half with two fouls while Kenny picked up two fouls in a 10-second span late in the first half.

Rodway opened the second half with a three-pointer and Hawk put the Cougars back in front, 42-40, with a short jumper.

Down 51-47 after 5-0 King's run, John Murphy made a layup and Sponaugle hit back-to-back three-pointers for a 55-51 lead with 12:58 left in the second half.

King's rallied to eventually take a 66-58 lead to set the stage for Kenny's heroics.

Misericordia, 9-7 (3-2), will visit Eastern, Saturday at 3:00.
