The Misericordia University women's basketball team led for just 2.3 seconds Wednesday at King's. Fortunately, for the Cougars, it was the last three seconds of a thrilling 62-61 come-from-behind win.
Justine Seely scored the game-winning layup to give MU its first lead and the Cougars held on as King's missed a pair of free throws with :01 remaining.
Liz Waleski made six three-pointers for a career-high 18 points and added nine rebounds while
Rachel Carmody had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Seely added 13 points, six assists and three blocked shots and
Shannon Croasdale grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Carmody and Waleski were part of Misericordia's 37-17 advantage in bench scoring. The Cougars also held a commanding 57-37 edge in rebounding while improving to 6-10 overall and 2-3 in the MAC Freedom.
The Cougars battled back from an early 14-point deficit and pulled within two points late in the third quarter, 42-40.
Down 50-45 heading into the final 10 minutes, Seely scored and then assisted on
Jaclyn Hajec's three-pointer to slice the lead to 52-50.
Trailing 56-51, Seely converted a three-point play to get back within 56-54 with 5:31 remaining.
After a Monarchs' basket, Seely sank a jumper to stay within two, 58-56. King's scored again and
Japriya Carroll responded with two free throws to make it 60-58 with 2:29 left.
King's went ahead 61-58 on a free throw, but the Monarchs went scoreless over the final 2:19.
Seely assisted on Croasdale's layup with 1:31 to play to get within 61-60.
MU's first chance to take the lead was off the mark, but Croasdale kept the Cougars alive with an offensive rebound and Carmody found Seely for the game-winner.
The Cougars fell behind 12-2 early and trailed 30-16 early in the second quarter.
Carmody scored six straight points and the Cougars cut the deficit to 34-27 at halftime.
Waleski hit a three-pointer and Carmody scored four points as part of 9-2 run in the third cut the margin to 42-40 late in the third period.
Misericordia will visit Eastern, Saturday.
