MU Volleyball Splits Tri-Match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Misericordia University volleyball team split a tri-match with Penn State Berks and Centenary, Saturday in the Anderson Center.

After dropping the opener to Penn State Berks in five sets (25-22, 25-15, 19-25, 15-25, 10-15), the Cougars swept Centenary, 3-0 (25-7, 25-13, 26-24).

Coleby Charlier had a team-high 12 kills in the opener and Tara Welliver and Michelle Sehested both add 10 kills.  Sehested had 14 digs and Welliver added 12.

Paige Shaughnessy had eight kills, 15 digs and four aces.

Nicole Tagerty had 43 assists and Kaitlin Wheeler had 18 digs and three aces.

In the nightcap, Welliver had a team-high 12 kills and five aces while Charlier and Megan Collins both had six kills.

Tagerty had 34 assists and Wheeler had four aces.

MU took the first two sets against PSU-Berks before the Lions rallied for the five-set win.

Aces by Wheeler and Sehested gave the Cougars a 17-14 lead in the first set and a Shaughnessy kill through two blockers on the right side made it 19-15.

Welliver had a cross-court smash and Shaughnessy followed with an ace to make it 22-17.

Sehested had a kill from the left side and Wheeler's ace inside the back line gave MU a 25-22 win.

In the second set, Wheeler had back-to-back aces to give the Cougars a 15-9 lead and Shaughnessy and Welliver both had smashes to stretch the lead to 22-13.

Welliver followed with a kill down the middle and Sehested had a kill from the left side to clinch a 25-15 win.

In the third set, the Cougars battled back from an 11-4 deficit to pull even, 17-17.   But, the Lions closed on an 8-2 run to stay alive with a 25-19 win.

Penn State Berks controlled much of the fourth set in a 25-15 win and took a 9-4 lead in the decisive set before holding off MU, 15-10.

After cruising to wins in the first two sets against Centenary, the Cougars battled to a hard-fought 26-24 win to clinch the sweep.
 
The Cougars return to MAC Freedom play at King's, Wednesday.
