Five different players scored goals as the Misericordia University women's soccer team defeated DeSales, 5-0, in the MAC Freedom championship match, Saturday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
The Cougars improved to 17-3 to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive season. DeSales finished the season at 9-10 after making their third consecutive MAC Freedom finals appearance.
MU's
Alexa Alchevsky anchored a defense that limited DeSales to five shots, including just one on goal, to earn MVP honors.
Jeanna Orfanos,
Alex Gallagher and
Amber Hartranft all had a goal and an assist for the Cougars.Â
Jacqueline Stevens and
Kailee Crockett added goals while
Ashley Edgell had two assists.
DeSales keeper Emily Hoats batted down an MU corner and Isabel McPeak cleared it away for the Bulldogs 12 minutes into the game.
The Cougars had a dangerous chance at 15:00 when Edgell had a give-and-go in the box with Gallagher, but her shot was just wide of the right post.
Misericordia cashed in when Orfanos collected a loose ball and sent a ball toward the left post where Stevens
got a toe on it for a 1-0 lead at 29:34.
Orfanos was involved again just over two minutes later to give MU a 2-0 lead. Gallagher took a shot from the right flank and Hartranft tapped the rebound to Orfanos
who buried it at 31:54
The Cougars extended their lead early in the second half when Edgell found Gallagher near the top of the box where
she fired a shot into the lower left corner for a 3-0 lead at 49:47.
Edgell added her second assist when found Crockett who
blasted a shot into the upper left corner for a 4-0 lead at 59:32.
Hartranft closed out the scoring at 76:41 when she played the ball over a sliding Hoats and
placed a shot into the empty net.
