Cougars Hang on to Beat Marywood

The Misericordia women's basketball team beat Marywood, 69-61, Friday evening at the Anderson Center.

Justine Seely had 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocks to lead the Cougars. Rachel Carmody had 12 points with 12 rebounds while Japriya Carroll had 13 points, including three three-pointers. Shannon Croasdale had six points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Paige Wampole had six points, two rebounds and two assists.

Carmody carried the load early, scoring their first nine points of the game as she traded buckets with the Pacers. Carroll hit a jumper and a three before Wampole snagged an offensive rebound in traffic and laid it in, which made the score 16-13 MU after one.

Misericordia opened the second quarter on a 15-8 run which included three's from Leanne Forsyth and Liz Waleski. MU took a 31-21 lead midway through the second. Marywood scored on a layup, Carroll swished a jumper with four minutes to go and then the teams went cold with neither team scoring until the last 30 seconds.

Seely split a par of foul shots, Marywood's Gab Giordano ran down and drained a pull-up jumper to make it 34-25. The Pacers stole the following inbound pass and laid it in to make the score 34-27 MU at the half.

Marywood came out aggressively early in the second half, scoring six points off a couple of turnovers to get it to 36-33 with 6:32 to go in the period. Misericordia responded by closing the quarter on an 18-7 run. Carroll capped the run by losing her defender on a Carmody pick and firing in a three from the right wing to make it 54-40 heading into the fourth.

Seely scored the first 13 points for MU in the fourth to help keep Marywood at bay, scoring her final points off a nice pass from Jaclyn Hajec to make it 67-59 with 49 seconds to go. Marywood ran down and scored in the paint to make it 67-61 before they fouled Ashley Johnson. Johnson stepped to the line and drained both shots to ice the game.

Seely's 17 points leaves her three shy of 1,000 for her career.

Misericordia moves to 6-4 and will host Manhattanville to open MAC Freedom play, Wednesday at 6:00.
