The Misericordia University men's basketball season came to a sudden halt with a heartbreaking 58-57 loss to Delaware Valley in the MAC Freedom semifinals, Wednesday night in the Anderson Center.
D.J. Marlow's three-point play gave the Cougars a 57-56 lead with just a minute to play, but the Aggies had a chance to tie or take the lead from the free throw line with 10 seconds remaining.
After two misses, Andre Butler kept the Aggies alive with his seventh offensive rebound and Tyliek Kimbrough hit the game-winning jumper with 0.8 seconds to play.
James Hawk had a turn-around three-pointer from the top of the key that caromed off the rim.
Jason Kenny had 12 points to lead the Cougars while Hawk and Marlow had 10 points each.
Erik Kerns had nine points and 10 rebounds and
Tyler McGarry had nine points on three second-half three-pointers.
Kimbrough and Chris Moran had 19 points each for Del Val while Barry Brockington added 16 points.
The Cougars trailed throughout much of the contest, but battled back from a 10-point deficit over final five minutes.
Down 56-46, with 5:49 to play, Marlow's slashing layup ignited an 11-0 run that put MU ahead for the just the second time in the game.
Kerns hit two free throws and fought to collect a defensive rebound that led to two free throws from
Griffin Sponaugle with 3:42 to play.
Kenny drove a wide-open lane to the margin to 56-54 with 3:12 to go.
Both teams went scoreless for the next two minutes until Marlow drove the lane and converted the three-point play for a 57-56 lead with 56.8 remaining.
The Cougars got a stop on the next possession, but then turned the ball over to set up the game-winning sequence.
Delaware Valley led 36-32 at halftime and took a 44-36 lead five minutes into the second half.
McGarry drilled a pair of three-pointers from both wings in a one-minute span and Kenny added a free throw for a 7-0 MU run to get within 44-43 with 11:01 to go.
Del Val answered with a 12-3 run to take a 56-46 lead to set up MU's rally.
The Aggies opened the game with pressure defense and took advantage of two MU turnovers to open a quick 9-2 lead.
D.J. Marlow entered the game and immediately ended the 7-0 Del Val run with a driving layup.
Marlow drained a three-pointer from the top of the key and Sponaugle hit two free throws to pull MU within 14-9 just under four minutes into the game.
The Aggies got back-to-back buckets from Chris Moran and Tyliek Kimbrough to take their biggest lead of the first half, 18-9, with 15:13 to go.
James Hawk scored underneath off an inbounds pass to ignite a 9-0 MU spurt.
Sponaugle buried a deep three from the right wing and Kerns hit a short jumper to cut the deficit to 18-16.
Kenny pulled the Cougars even off a feed from Marlow after a Sponaugle steal at the other end.
Trailing 23-18, Kenny scored three straight baskets and finished with a three-point play to give MU its first lead of the game, 25-23, with 8:39 to go in the first half.
The Cougars held the Aggies to 35.7% shooting from the floor, but the Aggies grabbed19 offensive rebounds which accounted for 21 more field goal attempts for the visitors.
Marlow and McGarry helped the MU bench out score the Aggies, 19-2.
Misericordia ends the season 15-11 while Delaware Valley, 19-7, will host Wilkes in the MAC Freedom title game, Saturday.
