The Misericordia University men's basketball team didn't spend much time in the bonus in the second half, but the Cougars made the most of it in a 77-72 win at DeSales, Wednesday.
After a
Griffin Sponaugle three-pointer put MU ahead, 73-71,
Tyler McGarry and
Jason Kenny both made two free throws in the final 15 seconds as the Cougars completed a sweep of the Bulldogs.
Kenny had 17 points to lead four Cougars in double figures.
Sponaugle had 14 points and
James Hawk added 12 points and seven rebounds while McGarry finished with 10 points.Â
Erik Kerns had nine points and game-highs with 10 rebounds and six assists.
After a hot-shooting first half, Misericordia led 55-42 less than six minutes into the second half, but DeSales charged back and took its first lead of the second half, 67-66, with 3:03 to play.
Alec Rodway had back-to-back layups to put MU back in front, 70-69 with 1:40 remaining.
After a DeSales bucket, Sponaugle drilled a three-pointer from the left corner to put the Cougars in front for good, 73-71, with less than a minute to play.
DeSales committed a turnover and was forced to foul to set the stage for McGarry and Kenny to seal the game from the foul line.
Sponaugle and McGarry combined for three three-pointers in a two-minute span early in the first half as the Cougars took an early 19-12 lead.
DeSales answered with eight straight points to go in front, 20-19, with 11:14 left in the first half.
Hawk's layup eventually put the Cougars back on top and McGarry hit another three-pointer for a 33-29 lead with 6:43 left in the first half.
Kerns added a three-pointer and Kenny scored five straight points before Hawk capped a 10- 0 run for a 43-32 lead with 1:18 left before halftime.
MU led 43-34 at halftime after shooting 53.6% over the first 20 minutes, including 54.5% (6-11) from 3-point range
Hawk scored two buckets to open the second half and Kerns had two straight baskets to give the Cougars their biggest lead of the night, 51-38, less than four minutes into the second half.
DeSales converted 13 free throws over the next 12 minutes to eventually pull even, 63-63, with 4:19 to go.
Sponaugle responded with a three-pointer from the left wing for a 66-63 MU lead with 4:11 left.
DeSales took its biggest lead of the night, 69-66, with 2:27 remaining before Rodway's back-to-back layups.
Misericordia, 11-9 (5-4 MAC Freedom), will host Wilkes, Saturday at 3:00.
