The Misericordia University women's basketball team fell to Wilkes, 64-61, Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Center.
Japriya Carroll scored a career-high 17 points while
Justine Seely scored 11 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked six shots.
Rachel Carmody added 10 points off the bench while
Shannon Croasdale played strong defense, making five steals.
Nikki Baro sank a baseline jumper that put the Cougars up 61-59 with 5:22 left in the game, but the Cougars did not score the rest of the way.
A jumper by
Leanne Forsyth off a feed from Baro followed by a Seely layup gave the Cougars a 10-6 early in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Carmody drilled a pull-up jumper in the lane and then two possessions later Seely made two foul shots, pulling MU within three at 20-17.
A few minutes later, Croasdale drained a three from the top of the key off a
Liz Waleski pass to make it 29-29 with 3:26 to go in the half.
Wilkes closed the quarter on a 10-2 run which sent the Cougars into the locker-room at halftime down 39-31.
Carroll drained a three off a feed from Baro on the Cougars first possession of the third quarter, pulling them within five.
Midway through the third, a Carmody three off a Croasdale pass made it 48-46 Wilkes, with 3:13 left in the quarter.
Carroll fired in another three, this time in the right corner in front of the MU bench, that made the score 55-50 Wilkes heading into the fourth quarter.
MU outscored Wilkes 9-4 in the first five minutes of the quarter, but couldn't score in the last five minutes of the game.
The Cougars grabbed more rebounds than Wilkes, 41-33 and shot better from the field, 42.6% to Wilkes's 37.7%.
MU is now 6-15 on the year and will play at Delaware Valley, Wednesday at 6:00.
