Cougars Split with Penn State Abington

The Misericordia softball team winning streak stopped at ten as they split against Penn State Abington, losing 6-4 before winning 4-0, on a windy Thursday afternoon at Anderson Field.

Penn State Abington jumped on the Cougars early, using a three-run homer in the first and then another run in the third to make it 4-0.

MU got two runs back in the fourth. Melissa Parker led off with a walk and then Caitlin Kennedy obliterated a ball over the left field wall to get the Cougars within two.

Penn State Abington tacked one two more runs in the fifth to make it 6-2, but Misericordia made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh.

Melanie Quintanilla led off with an infield single and then Abby Marzzacco bunted her over to second. Lori Brennan ripped a single into right field which scored Quintanilla to make 6-3.

Brennan got to third on a Parker ground out, and then Kennedy reached on an error which Brennan scored on to make it 6-4. But the rally ended their as the next batter ground out to the pitcher.

Alissa Steier took the loss for the Cougars; she went 4.1 innings and allowed five hits, six runs (three earned) with a strikeout.

Brennan went 3-4 with a RBI and a run scored while Kennedy went 1-4 with a homer and two RBI. 

MU bounced back in game two behind a strong pitching performance by Jordan Hoffman, who allowed three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. It was Hoffman's second complete game of the season.

Misericordia jumped on Penn State Abington in the first inning, crossing the plate three times.

Quintanilla led off with a single to left and then Marzzacco reached on an infield single. Brennan reached safely on an error that scored Quintanilla and advanced Marzzacco to third.

Parker singled up the middle to drive home Marzzacco and put Brennan on third. Brennan then scored off a wild pitch.

MU scored again in the bottom of the sixth, Jessica Pluta pinch hit for Parker and smashed a single into right. Kennedy drove her home with a rocket of a double into right which plated Pluta.

Diana Kestenbaum helped Hoffman get out of trouble in the sixth, by making a nice catch near the wall in left and then throwing out the runner at third to end the inning. 

Parker went 1-2 with an RBI while Marzzacco and Quintanilla both went 1-3 with a run scored. 

The split leaves Misericordia at 13-7, heading into their MAC Freedom Saturday doubleheader with undefeated Manhattanville that starts at 1:00.
