The Misericordia softball team split a doubleheader against Muhlenberg, Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Field.
Â
The Cougars fell 2-1 in game one and then won the nightcap 4-0.
Â
In game one,
Melanie Quintanilla went 1-4 with an RBI while
Diana Kestenbaum was 1-3 with a double and a run scored.
Â
Neither team scored until the fourth inning, when Muhlenberg used a double and a sac fly to left to go up 2-0. The Cougars scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth.
Â
Kestenbaum smashed a double off the wall in center,
Mackenzie Yurko singled to get her to third and a Quintanilla single scored Kestenbaum.
Abby Marzzacco laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, but the next two batters were retired.
Â
Quintanilla reached on an error with one out in the bottom of the seventh and then got to second on a sacrifice by Marzzacco; but the rally ended on a pop up to first.Â
Bailee Schies shut down the Mules in game two, allowing just three hits while striking out three.
Â
Whitney Ellenberg went 2-3 with a double and a three-run homer while
Lori Brennan was 2-3 with an RBI.
Â
In game two it once again took four innings for either team to score, but this time it was Misericordia who struck first.
Â
Brennan singled to center,
Melissa Parker singled to left which advanced allowed pinch runner
Jessica Pluta to hustle from first to third.
Caitlin Kennedy reached on a fielder's choice while Pluta was thrown out at home by the shortstop. Ellenberg made sure the next three runs crossed the plate, belting the ball over the wall in left center for her fourth homer of the year.
Â
Brennan singled home Quintanilla in the fifth to give MU a 4-0 lead they would not relinquish.
The Cougars made several great plays on defense in both games. Yurko made a diving stop on a grounder to her left and flipped the ball to Parker to end the fourth in game one.
In game two Parker snagged a low line drive and then applied the tag to the runner who was too far off first to end the second.
Cailey Ware made a fantastic diving catch in shallow center field in the sixth.Â
Â
The split leaves MU at 17-11 heading into Saturday's conference showdown with Delaware Valley; first pitch is at 1:00.
