Cougars Sweep Wilkes to End Regular Season

The Misericordia University baseball team swept Wilkes, 6-4, 8-5, to wrap up the regular season, Saturday at Artillery Park.

Cory Vogeli won the opener with relief help from Jim Tunison, Mike Blazaskie and Elliot Forde while Chris Boroch had two hits and Kenny Jarema drove in two runs.

Kyle Lindsay had three hits in the nightcap and Miles Westrich drove in four runs on two hits.

Mike Turton picked up the win while Tunison earned the save.

In the opener, Vogeli allowed four runs on four hits and five walks in five-plus innings to improve to 7-0.  Tunison and Blazaskie combined for a scoreless sixth and Forde tossed a perfect seventh to earn his third save.

The Cougars took a 2-0 in the second inning.  Alec Iurato drew a lead-off walk and scored on Jeremy DeCotiis' single through the right side.  Miles Westrich singled and stole second with DeCotiis taking home on the throw.

Tied 2-2, MU went ahead 5-3 in the fifth.  The Cougars drew three straight walks to load the bases and Kenny Jarema singled through the right side to plate a pair of runs.  D.J. Navoczynski added a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.

Westrich drew a one-out walk in the sixth and eventually scored on Kyle Lindsay's two-out single through the left side.

In the nightcap, Wilkes took a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer in the bottom of the second.  The Cougars tied with a pair of runs in the top of the third.  Boroch walked and Lindsay was hit a pitch before doubled to left center to drive in a run.  Iurato flew out to center to send Lindsay home with the tying run.

After Wilkes went back on top on a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth, MU scored four times in the top of the sixth.

Iurato walked and advanced to second on Navoczynski's single through the left side.  Jeremy DeCotiis was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Westrich put the Cougars in front with a two-run double down the right field line.  Al Reda's pinch-hit single drove in a run and Boroch made it 6-3 with a single to center field.  Lindsay singled to load the bases, but the Colonels induced an inning-ending double-play to avoid further damage.

Wilkes got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but the Cougars tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh.

Iurato led off with an infield single and Navoczynski reached on an error.  DeCotiis singled to right with one out and Westrich singled through the right side to score two runs and give the Cougars an 8-4 lead.

Tunison got a double-play to end the sixth inning and struck out two in the seventh to earn the save.

Misericordia will open the MAC Freedom playoffs, Friday against King's.
