Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Cruises Past Ursinus to Start the Season

The Misericordia women's soccer team opened the season with a 2-0 victory over Ursinus, Thursday evening at Mangelsdorf Field.

Alex Gallagher played a part in both goals; she scored the first one and assisted the other goal which was scored by Jordyn Martini.

Alyssa Pojero made six saves in the contest.

Gallagher put the Cougars up 1-0 just 12 minutes into the game when she blasted a penalty kick into the right hand corner of the goal.

MU was awarded the penalty when the referee called a foul in the box because Ashley Edgell was pushed in the back while going up to head the ball.

Twenty minutes later Gallagher turned provider. She crossed a ball from the right wing towards the near post which Martini ran onto and volleyed past the goalie.

The Cougars kept up the pressure in the second half, creating several opportunities where they could have increased their lead.

Minutes into the second half, Kylen Smith ran onto a ball on the left side of the 18 and got a low shot passed the keeper that looked like it was going in but it rolled just wide of the far post.

A few minutes later Emily Szeflinski laid a ball off to Gallagher at the top of the box and she blasted towards goal, but it went wide left.

In the 76th minute Jeanna Orfanos niftily beat one defender and then tried to volley a shot towards goal, but it was blocked.

Seven minutes later Gabby Babula came down the left wing, danced around two defenders and got a shot off but the goalie saved it.

MU outshot Ursinus 17-8 while each team had two corners.

The Cougars return to action Sunday, away at Penn State Berks. Kickoff is at 2:00.
