Carmody's Big Day Lifts MU Women Over FDU

Box Score The Misericordia University women's basketball team used a solid team effort to hand FDU-Florham its first league loss, 86-67, Saturday afternoon in the Anderson Center.

Rachel Carmody had career-highs with 24 points and 14 rebounds and Japriya Carroll tied her career high with 19 points as all five MU starters scored in double figures.

Justine Seely had 15 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks and four assists.  Shannon Croasdale had 13 points and six assists and Leanna Forsyth added 11 points and four assists.

Carroll drilled a three-pointer from the left corner to break a 5-5 tie early in the first quarter and the Cougars never trailed.

Carroll drained a three-pointer to ignite a 10-run and found Carmody and Seely underneath for a pair of layups.  Seely closed the run with a foul line jumper to give MU a 23-11 lead with 3:30 left in the first quarter.

FDU cut MU's lead to four points twice in the second period, but Forsyth ended the half with a fast break layup and a pair of free throws to give the Cougars a 47-39 lead at intermission.

The Cougars showed no let up after halftime as they outscored the Devils 21-14 in the third quarter.

Leading 59-49 with 2:05 left in the third period, Carmody scored MU's next six points and Liz Waleski drilled a three-pointer from in front of the MU bench at the buzzer for a 68-53 lead.

Misericordia maintained a double digit lead throughout the fourth quarter to improve to 12-6 overall and 6-2 in the MAC Freedom.

Misericordia will host Eastern, Wednesday at 6:00.
