The Misericordia women's soccer team suffered its first MAC Freedom loss, 1-0, to Wilkes, in a battle of regionally-ranked teams, Wednesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.
Wilkes scored the lone goal of the game in the 29
th minute.
The Cougars had a 16-4 shot advantage, but managed five shots on goal compared to three for the Colonels. MU also had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Cougars had a couple of chances early in the game to take the lead, but shots by
Hannah Larkin,
Amber Hartranft and
Alex Gallagher were all off target.
Wilkes played a ball from deep in its own end that skipped behind the MU defense and Nicolette Towlen ran it down and placed a shot over a sliding
Alyssa Pojero as she came off her line.
Gallagher led MU with five shots, including a chance to tie it up in the 32
nd minute, but the Wilkes keeper made the save.
In the second half, the Cougars had one of their better chances to tie up the game in the 60
th minute.
Jackie Stevens crossed the ball into the box where it was loose in front of the net until the Colonels finally cleared it away.
Misericordia had one last chance to equalize in the 83
rd minute, but could not find the back of the net. Pojero's 50-yard drop kick found Stevens, who fired a shot but the keeper was able to make the save.
Misericordia, 11-3-2, is 4-1 in the MAC Freedom and in a four-way tie for first place with Wilkes, DeSales and Eastern.
The Cougars will face FDU-Florham in their final road contest of the regular season, Sunday at 1:00.
