The Misericordia University women's volleyball team ended the season on a winning note with a hard-fought 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22) victory at Wilkes, Wednesday night.
After dropping the first set, 25-22, the Cougars rallied to win next three sets by identical 25-22 scores.
Seniors
Michelle Sehested,
Ariana Gagliardi,
Coleby Charlier and
Paige Shaughnessy all had big nights as they closed their careers with a win.
Gagliardi had a career-high 32 assists and Shaughnessy added a career-high 23 digs. Sehested had a team-high 14 kills and Charlier added seven kills.
Sarah Pool had 11 kills and
Gabrielle Goodnow added nine kills and five blocks.Â
Alexa Santoro added four blocks.
Karley May had 14 assists and two aces and
Tara Welliver added two aces and two blocks.
Down 5-1 in the first set, the Cougars scored six straight points to take a 7-5 lead thanks to three errors by the Colonels and two kills by Pool.
Wilkes scored six straight points to break a 10-10 tie.
Wilkes jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set, but two kills by Goodnow keyed a 4-0 run to tie it, 7-7. Wilkes rallied to take an 18-17 lead, but a Sehested kill and an error put MU back in front, 19-18.
The Colonels took a 22-21 lead, but a kills by Santoro and Charlier sandwiched a Wilkes error to win the set.
In a back-and-forth third set, Wilkes took a 22-21 lead, but two errors and an ace by May set up Goodnow's game-winner.
The Cougars closed the final set on a 6-0 run, including two kills by Sehested and clinching ace by Shaughnessy.
MU finished the first season under head coach Rob Wingert at 14-17.
