Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Gruber, Defense Lead MU Past King's

The Misericordia field hockey team used stellar defense and timely goals to defeat King's College, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at McGeehan Field.

Haley Gruber scored twice for the Cougars and Kayla Pogash scored her first career goal for MU.

Katelyn Campbell made one save in goal.

King's (6-7, 2-1) took the lead less than a minute into the game, but the Cougar defense pitched a shutout the rest of the way allowing only one more shot on goal.

After King's took the early lead, Pogash turned the momentum by firing a shot into the back of the net to tie the game about five minutes later.

The Monarchs had some of their best chances to take the lead back before halftime, but were unable to get a shot on goal, having five shots blocked in the first half.

Coming out of the break, Misericordia had a couple chances to take the lead early in the half, but shots by Colby Eldridge and Haley Gruber were denied.

Both teams continued to struggle getting shots off until Gruber found herself all alone with just the keeper to beat.  She collected a pass from Kailey Vogl and fired a shot into the right side of the cage to give the Cougars a lead they would not relinquish.

Gruber added an insurance goal two minutes later off a corner. Vogl took the corner and found Madisyn Granoski who was able to find an open Gruber who put the game away with her fourth goal of the season.

King's earned a couple corners late in the game, but Campbell stepped up and made a big save to keep the Monarchs from getting any closer.

Misericordia (4-8, 2-1) will now travel to face William Paterson, Wednesday at 7:00.
