The Misericordia women's basketball team fell in their season opener, 64-59, to Lebanon Valley, Wednesday evening at the Anderson Center.
Japriya Carroll led the Cougars with 17 points and three assists while
Paige Wampole led the team with 12 rebounds. Â As a team, Misericordia outrebounded Lebanon Valley 57-35.
It was a quick start for the Dutchmen as they got out to a 4-0 start in the first three minutes of the game, but Carroll got the Cougars on the board with a three for the first points of the season.
Lebanon Valley raced ahead to a 15-7 lead in the first quarter, but a 7-2 run for the Cougars, thanks to another three by Carroll and four points by Jordan Barth, made it just a three point deficit after the first period.
In the second quarter, the Cougars quickly tied it 17-17 on a three-pointer by
Jaclyn Hajec. After some back-and-forth play, Lebanon Valley jumped out to a 25-20 lead, but a 5-0 run by the Cougars tied it back up. After a layup by the Dutchmen and a couple free throws, Lebanon Valley held a 28-27 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Cougars took their first lead of the game at 35-33 on a layup by Wampole. Misericordia built their lead to 40-35, but LVC ended the quarter on a 6-2 run to cut the Cougars' lead to one entering the final period.
Lebanon Valley opened the fourth quarter on a 13- 5 run take a seven-point lead with 6:30 to go in the game. Â Erica Haefele hit a three for the Cougars to bring the score to 55-52, but that was as close as the Cougars came until a three by Emma Hayes with 15 seconds left made it a three-point deficit once again. However, LVC hit two free throws for to seal the game.
Up next for the Cougars is Bryn Athyn, Saturday at 3:00 at Neumann University as part of the Neumann University Tip-Off.
