Fresh off their first regional ranking in five years, the Misericordia University women's basketball team lived up to the billing with an impressive 80-54win over King's, Wednesday night in the Anderson Center.
The Cougars, ranked fourth in the Atlantic region, finished the season sweep of King's and clinched a MAC Freedom tournament berth in the process.
Rachel Carmody had 19 points to lead four Cougars in double figures.Â
Justine Seely had 14 points and 11 rebounds and
Japriya Carroll and
Paige Wampole added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Rebecca Prociak led the Lady Monarchs with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cougars made four straight three pointers to open the game as they raced out to a 14-3 lead and never looked back.
Carroll drilled a three-pointer from the right corner and Seely and Waleski followed with short jumpers to give MU a 25-7 lead.
Leanne Forsyth made two free throws and Carmody used a nice spin move off a feed from Waleski to make it 29-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Carmody was dominant in the second quarter as she scored 12 consecutive points for MU. She finished back-to-back layups to cap a 6-0 run for a 40-17 advantage with 3:53 left in the first half. After a Shae Grim layup for the Monarchs, Carmody converted a three-point play to ignite an 8-0 spurt.
Liz Waleski hit a three-pointer from the top of the key and
Shannon Croasdale drove and dished to Wampole underneath to put Misericordia ahead 48-19.
Carroll's pull-up jumper in the lane gave the Cougars a 50-21 halftime lead.
Misericordia improved to 16-6 overall and 9-2 in the MAC Freedom while King's fell to 4-17 and 2-9. The Cougars will host Wilkes in their home finale, Saturday at 1:00.
