Cougars Split at PSU-Abington in Two High Scoring Games

The Misericordia softball team split at Penn State Abington Sunday afternoon.

MU won the first game 9-6 before they lost the second 8-6.

Jordan Hoffman picked up the win in the opener: she went 6.0 innings, allowed nine hits while striking out three batters. Hoffman did damage at the plate as well, she went 1-4 with six RBI.

Lori Brennan went 2-3 with a double, a triple, an RBI, a walk and a run scored. Abby Marzzacco was 3-5 with two runs scored. Melanie Quintanilla was 2-4 with a walk, an RBI and three runs scored.

The Cougars tallied the runs in the first inning. Brooke Moyle led off with a single to center and Marzzacco followed with a single to right to advance her to second. Alexis D'Amico laid down a sac bunt to advance the runners before Quintanilla singled home Moyle. Brennan walked to load the bases before Hoffman knocked in Marzzacco and Quintanilla to make 3-0 MU after the first.

The Lions got back via a double to center in the bottom of the first. Neither team scored in the second inning.

After D'Amico and Quintanilla walked, Brennan laid down a bunt. D'Amico got caught in a run down while Brennan got to second and Quintanilla got to third. Hoffman drove them both in to make it 5-1 but got tagged out trying to advance to third. Caitlin Kennedy smashed a triple to right field before Ciara DeLong singled her home to make it 6-1 after three.

In the fourth, Quintanilla singled to center and Brennan tripled to right to plate her and make it 7-1.

Penn State Abington got two back in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap to 7-3.

Another Hoffman single scored D'Amico and Marzzacco in the sixth to make it 9-3.

Penn State Abington scored three in bottom of the 7th, but MU shut down the threat to end game one at 9-6.

In game two, Penn State Abington scored first in the bottom of the first via double to center. MU would respond in the top of the second.

Quintanilla singled to center and Brennan doubled to center to score her. Brennan advanced to third on an error by the catcher. Hoffman reached on a fielder's choice as Brennan was tagged out at home. Kennedy hit a single to left before Delong doubled to left to put Kennedy on third and score Hoffman. A wild pitch advanced both runners which made it 3-1 MU. Taylor Kenerson singled to left to score Delong and give Misericordia a 4-1 lead.

Penn State Abington scored four in the fifth and three in the sixth to make 8-4.

The Cougars scored twice and had the tying run at the plate, but grounded out to end the game at 8-6.

Misericordia will play at Muhlenberg, Wednesday at 3:00.
