Softball Sweeps FDU-Florham In Conference Home Opener

The Misericordia University softball team swept FDU-Florham on a sunny Tuesday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The Cougars won game one 10-3 and won game two 12-3.

Brooke Moyle picked up the win in game one. She went 7.0 innings, allowed eight hits and struck out three. Moyle did damage with her bat as well; she went 2-5 with a triple.

Lori Brennan was 2-2 with a double, two RBI and a walk. Jessica Pluta went 3-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Caitlin Kennedy was 2-2 with a double, two walks and two runs scored.

The Devils struck first via a double to left that scored a runner from second. MU tied things up in the bottom of the first when Brennan drew a walk with the bases loaded.

Abby Marzzacco made a nice diving catch to rob a hit in the top of the fourth.

The Cougars put up a three spot in the bottom of the inning.

Kennedy led off with a single to center and Brennan followed that up with a double off the wall in center field. Jordan Hoffman sliced a single through the left side to score both runners. A few batters later Marzzacco singled to left which plated Pluta and gave MU a 4-1 lead after four.

The Devils scored twice in the top of sixth to make it 4-3 before Misericordia scored six runs in the bottom half of the inning to widen their lead to 10-3. Moyle induced three fly outs to end the first game.

Hoffman picked up the win in game two. She allowed seven hits over 5.0 innings.

Moyle was 2-4 with three RBI and Brennan was 1-2 with a double, three RBI, a walk and a run scored. Alexis D'Amico was 2-3 with two runs scored and Pluta was 2-2 with two runs scored. Melanie Quintanilla was 2-3 with a RBI, a walk and two runs scored.

In the bottom of the first, after singles by Marzzacco and D'Amico, Quintanilla ripped a single into center field to score Marzzacco and give MU a 1-0 lead.

The Devils scored three runs in the second to take an early 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Pluta singled to right and advanced to second on a groundout by Taylor Kenerson. Moyle singled her home to close the gap to one at 3-2.

In the bottom of the third D'Amico hit the first pitch she saw through the left side and Quintanilla followed with her own single through the left side. Kennedy walked to load the bases before Brennan mashed a double to left center which cleared the bases and made it 5-3.

MU would end the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Brennan led off with a walk. Pinch-hitter Victoria Schmidt singled up the middle and Pluta walked to load the bases. After the next hitter was retired, Moyle smacked a two-run single to score Brennan and Schmidt. Pinch-hitter Dani Clifford reached on a fielder's choice and Pluta advanced to third. D'Amico reach on error by the shortstop, which allowed Pluta to score and Clifford to get to third. Quintanilla walked again to load the bases.

Maddie Stebich clobbered a ball over the wall in center field for a walk-off grand slam that was the first home run of her career.

The sweep puts Misericordia at 11-11 overall and 5-3 in the MAC Freedom

The Cougars will host King's, Thursday at 2:00.
