Baseball Scores Late to Edge Stevens

The Misericordia University baseball team had just four hits, but took advantage off 11 walks, in its back and forth, 8-7 win against Stevens on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Tambur Field.

Steve Weisensee went 2-2 with three RBI and Santo Guinta went 1-1 with a double and a run scored. Conor Smith was 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Brett Davis had three walks, a sacrifice bunt and two stolen bases. Kenny Jarema was 0-2 with three walks and two runs scored.

MU struck first in the bottom of the first. Jarema led off with a walk, Smith was hit by a pitch and Jarema advanced to third on a fly out to center by Tyler Holzapfel. Smith stole second and Jeremy DeCotiis was hit by a pitch. Alec St. Pier reached on an error by the third baseman who bobbled the ball and threw it over the head of the first baseman. Jarema and Smith scored on the play to make it 2-0 after one.

Davis scored on a passed ball in the second as MU took a 3-0 lead before they had a hit in the ballgame.

The Ducks scored once in the third and again in the fourth to make it 3-2. In the bottom of the inning, Davis walked, stole second and advanced to third on Jarema's fly out to center. Smith knocked a single into center to tally the first hit of the day for MU and score Davis to make it 4-2. Smith was tagged out at second on a nice throw by the center fielder.

The teams traded zeros through the fifth and sixth innings before Stevens pushed four runs across in the seventh to take a 6-4 lead. MU fought their way back in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-6.

Stevens scored their final run in the top of the eight on a single to left.

Parker Abate led off with a walk, Davis bunted him over and Jarema walked. Guinta walked to load the bases and the next batter was retired. Weisensee smacked a single into left; and the left fielder made a diving attempt on the ball and narrowly missed it. Jarema hustled from second to score and give MU the 8-7 lead.

Davis came in to get the save in the ninth. DeCotiis made a slick diving catch in center to help preserve the win.

The Cougars are now 19-8 and will host Eastern, Friday at 3:30.
