The Misericordia University baseball team swept Manhattanville, 8-3 and 5-1, on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Tambur Field.
Garrett Pelko tossed a complete game to get the win in game one, allowing eight hits and striking out six.
Tyler Holzapfel went 2-4 with a two-run homer.
Conor Smith went 3-4 with a double, a stolen base and three runs scored.
Kenny Jarema went 2-4 with two RBI.
Santo Guinta went 2-4 with a double, an RBI, a walk and a run scored.
Evan Bush went 2-2 with an RBI.
Steve Weisensee went 1-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
Misericordia got on the board in the bottom of the first. Smith led off with a single to center and
Jeremy DeCotiis bunted him over. Jarema lined a single to center to score Smith to make it 1-0.
In the bottom of the second, Guinta led off with a single to left. Two batters later Bush smacked a single to center and Guinta went first to third.
Billy Kerwien laid down a bunt to score Guinta and make it 2-0.
The Valiants scored twice in the third to tie the score at 2-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, with runners at second and third, Bush singled up the middle to score Weisensee from third to give the Cougars back the lead at 3-2.
In the fifth, Smith started things off with a single through the left side and stole second. Three batters later, Holzapfel launched a ball toward left field that just kept going until it was over the fence for a two-run homer. Weisensee drew a walk and Guinta walloped a double to left center as Weisensee scored from first to make it 6-2 MU.
Manhattanville scored once in the top of the sixth before Misericordia scored two more in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-3.
In the top of the seventh, Manhattanville started with an infield single. Pelko induced a 4-6-3 double play and got the final batter to ground out to second to win game one.
MU had the leadoff batter reach safely in five of the six innings they batted.
Jake Kurtz went 6.1 innings, allowing three hits and striking out five to earn the win in game two.
Holzapfel went 3-3 with a homer, four RBI and a run scored.
Parker Abate went 1-2 with a double and a stolen base. Guinta went 1-3 with a double and a run scored.
Brett Davis went 1-3 with a double.
MU again scored the opening run of the game in the bottom of the first. DeCotiis was hit by a pitch and got all the way to third on a throwing error by the pitcher when he tried to pick DeCotiis off. Holzapfel ripped a single to right to make it 1-0.
The Valiants scored in the second to tie things back up at 1-1, but MU retook the lead in the bottom half of the inning.
Guinta led off with a double to center and advanced to third on a ground out to second by Davis. Abate put down a bunt to score Guinta and make it 2-1 MU.
In the bottom of the fifth, with Smith at third and Jarema at first, Holzapfel blasted a ball over the right field fence for his second homer of the day which provided the final runs of the game at 5-1.
Misericordia finishes the regular season 28-12 (16-5) and will play King's in the MAC Freedom championships, Friday.
