Brennan, Hoffman Lead MU Softball to Split on Day 1

The Misericordia University softball team split a pair of games at the MAC Freedom Championships, Saturday at Delaware Valley.

After dropping the opener, 8-0, to top-seeded Manhattanville, the Cougars defeated Wilkes in an elimination game, 5-0.

The Cougars will face Manhattanville in another elimination game, Sunday at 11:00 a.m.  The winner will face King's in the championship game.

Lori Brennan hit a grand slam and drove in five runs against Wilkes and Jordan Hoffman tossed a five-hitter.

Melanie Quintanilla led off the game with a single up the middle and Alexis D'Amico reached on an error with both runners advancing to second and third.

One out later, Brennan grounded out to the pitcher with Quintanilla coming home to give MU a 1-0 lead.

The score held until the seventh inning when Quintanilla singled to center with one out.  D'Amico singled to left and Taylor Kenerson reached on an infield single to load the bases.

Brennan drilled a homer down the left field line to provide some breathing room.

Wilkes to a lead-off double in the bottom of the seventh, but Hoffman got the next three batters in order, including her only strikeout of the game, to secure the win.

In the opener, Melanie Quintanilla had MU's lone hit and also reached base via a hit by pitch.

The Valiants took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and closed the game with six runs in the bottom of the fifth.
