Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Balance and Defense Lead Cougars to Win Over King's

A big rivalry game did not rattle the Misericordia women's basketball team as they eased to victory over King's College, 64-38, Wednesday night at the Anderson Center. The Cougars are now 9-6 and 2-2 in the MAC Freedom while King's drops to 8-8 and 3-2 in conference play.

Rachel Carmody recorded her third straight double-double, and fourth overall, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Paige Wampole added 10 points and six boards and Japriya Carroll scored seven points and dished out six assists. Overall, it was a balanced effort as 11 Cougars found their way into the scoring column.

After getting out-rebounded in their last contest against Delaware Valley for just the second time this season, the Cougars were once again dominant on the glass, grabbing 52 rebounds, 15 on the offensive end, to just 33 for the Monarchs.

Misericordia also had a 21-7 advantage in points off turnovers and doubled up King's, 36-18, in points in the paint.

The defensive intensity started early as Japriya Carroll stole the ball and raced to the other end for a breakaway layup to put the Cougars up 8-5 with 6:07 to go in the first quarter. MU finished the period on a 9-0 run, getting buckets from five different players, to take a 21-10 lead into the second period.

The second quarter was more of the same as the Misericordia outscored the Monarchs 17-10. Carmody, Wampole and Brenna Karnish each contributed with four points and Carroll hit a big three to create more separation.

Out of the break, Kalynn Sefcik put back a layup off an offensive rebound to put the Cougars up 40-20 early in the second half. Misericordia went on another 9-0 run which included a three pointer by Liz Waleski, to put the game away before the start of the fourth quarter.

The Cougars are back in action, Saturday at 1:00, when they travel to Center Valley and take on DeSales.
