Madisyn Granoski led the way with two goals as the Misericordia University field hockey team defeated Wilkes University, 4-1, in its final MAC Freedom matchup of the season, Wednesday on Mangelsdorf Field.
After both teams scored in the opening eight minutes, the Cougars responded with three unanswered goals to seal the game.
Granoski opened the scoring when she connected on a tip in from
Kayla Pogash in the 4
th minute. Pogash ripped a shot towards the far post, which was tipped in by Granoski following a
Tori Carsley penalty corner.
Moments later, Wilkes was able to capitalize on a corner of their own when Lauren Shiplett fired a one-timer from just inside the circle in the 8
th minute. Â Zoe Stepanski fed the ball to Shiplett on the corner entry.
In the 24
th minute, the Cougars regained the lead on an unassisted goal from
Kailey Vogl. The senior forward gathered the loose ball in the center of the circle after Carsley had it poked away by a Colonel defender.
Soon after Vogl's go-ahead goal, Misericordia's defense was able to come away with a huge stop to preserve its lead. Cheyenne Mazzocca ripped a shot past Misericordia goalkeeper
Katelyn Campbell, but was denied by a defensive save from
Allie Bianco, who controlled and cleared the ball.
After taking a 2-1 advantage into halftime, the Cougars quickly built upon their lead with goals in the 41
st and 42
nd minutes.
The combination of Granoski and Pogash connected once more for the third Cougar goal. Pogash ripped another ball towards the cage, which was deflected into the goal by Granoski's stick for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Cougars added on another score 25-seconds later when Carsley connected on a Gruber one-timer with a diving attempt from in front of the cage.
Misericordia improves to 3-4 in the MAC Freedom while Wilkes falls to 4-3. The Cougars will wrap up their season at Marywood, Saturday.
