The Misericordia University field hockey team lost an overtime thriller to DeSales, 2-1, Saturday on McGeehan Field.
Anna Effinger sent the game to overtime with an equalizer in the 62
nd minute on a penalty stroke. The first-year athlete beat the goalkeeper high with a strike to the left side for her second goal of the season.
The Cougars threatened with three consecutive shots in the 18
th minute following an Effinger penalty corner.
Kayla Pogash's rip was deflected away by the goalkeeper and then
Haley Gruber had her second chance opportunity denied. The Bulldog's then blocked a Pogash rip before controlling possession.
Just after the start of the second half, Misericordia threatened again off another Effinger penalty corner. Gruber ripped a shot towards the net, but had it denied by a nice, heads-up save by the Bulldog's goalkeeper.
The Cougars defense kept the team within striking distance throughout the contest.
Katelyn Campbell made two big saves in the 16
th minute to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard. The first save was off a tip-in from Julia DeLuca and the latter was a rip from Kylie Honnick-Payne. Both shots were generated off DeSales penalty corners.
Following Effinger's equalizer, Misericordia's defense kept the game knotted with a strong defensive stand in the final three minutes of the second half. The Cougars defense fought-off two penalty corners and blocked two shots to force the game into overtime.
Hannah Williams scored both of the Bulldogs' goals. Her first goal came in the 23
rd minute off a rebounded shot from Christie Hansen while her game-winner was off a one-timer in the 76
th minute.
Misericordia falls to 2-9 on the season and 1-2 in the MAC Freedom. The Cougars host William Paterson, Tuesday at 4:00.
