The Misericordia University football team ended the regular season with a hard-fought 21-14 loss to Lycoming, Saturday afternoon at a frigid Mangelsdorf Field.
In a game that featured four turnovers by each team, the Warriors scored the eventual game-winning touchdown with six seconds remaining in the first half and thwarted a couple of fourth-quarter threats by the Cougars.
Aaron Barry threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns an
Isaiah Williams had 120 yards receiving and a score.
Sam Gillison added a touchdown catch for MU and
Jamal Dallas had a team-high 76 yards rushing.
Garrett Murray had 11 tackles and an interception and Zack Orzell and
Damian Diaz both added interceptions. Joe Grasso had a fumble recovery for the Cougars.
The Cougars took advantage of the game's first turnover when Grasso recovered a fumble on Lycoming's first play from scrimmage at Warriors' 22.
David Cromwell went off left tackle for 12 yards to set up a first and goal at the 10.
Facing third-and-goal from the 14, Barry hit Williams on a slant for a touchdown to give MU a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.
Murray's interception gave the Cougars the ball near midfield, but Lycoming got it back on an interception on MU's first play.
The Warriors went 66 yards in 11 plays to tie score, 7-7, with 4:22 left in the first quarter.
Lycoming recovered a fumble in Misericordia territory midway through the second quarter and took just three plays to take a 14-7 lead with 6:00 remaining.
On MU's next possession, Dallas bounced off a scrum and broke a 49-yard run down the left sideline to the Lycoming 26.
Dallas had two powerful runs to set up a first down at the 13 and Barry found a wide-open Gillison in the back of the end zone to pull MU even, 14-14, with 2:29 left in the first half.
The Warriors took advantage of an MU penalty on the ensuing kickoff and went 45 yards in eight plays to take a 21-14 lead just before halftime.
Midway through the third quarter, the Cougars drove into Lycoming territory before turning the ball over on downs.
On second-and-9 from their own 32, Barry rolled right and hit Williams, who made a sliding catch for 11 yards to the 43. A roughing the passer penalty gave the Cougars a first down at the Lycoming 42.
Barry went around the left end to convert a fourth-and-two for a first down at the 31, but a penalty backed the Cougars up and the drive stalled.
The Cougars forced a punt on the next series, but Lycoming got the ball back on an interception near midfield.
Misericordia got the ball back just three plays later on Orzell's interception at the 50 yard line.
On third-and-7, Williams made a diving catch on a tipped ball to give the Cougars a first down at the 27.
Lycoming thwarted the drive with an interception, but the Cougars again took just three plays to regain possession on a leaping interception by Diaz.
Josh Dieter's eight-yard reception and a four-yard run by Dallas gave MU a first down at their own 39.
Barry rolled left and hit
Klayton Kelly for a first down near midfield.
Barry placed a perfect pass over the top of the defense to Kelly for 17 yards along the left sideline for another first down at the Lycoming 34.
Kelly made a grab across the middle for five yards, but a fourth-down pass was incomplete and the Warriors regained possession with 2:38 to play.
Misericordia forced a three-and-out and got the ball back at their own 26 with 2:17 remaining.
Barry rolled to his left on first down and found Williams for 15 yards to the 41.
Williams made a tough catch across the middle for 15 yards to convert a third-and-10 across midfield.
Williams went over the middle again 13 yards and a first down at the 31.
Barry's pass on fourth-and-10 was just out of reach of a diving Kelly at the goal line and Lycoming ran the final 60 seconds off the clock.
The Cougars end the regular season at 8-2 overall and tied for second in the MAC at 7-1.
Misericordia will play its first postseason game in the MAC-Centennial Bowl series next week.
