Cougars Win Eighth Straight, Remain Unbeaten in MAC

The Misericordia University football team used a balanced offensive attack and some key defensive stops to remain unbeaten in the MAC with a 39-29 win at Albright, Saturday.

The Cougars won their eighth straight game to improve to 8-1 overall and 7-0 in the MAC.

Aaron Barry threw for two touchdowns and added one on the ground and Clayton Vleck had two touchdown receptions.

Isaiah Williams and Sam Gillison both had over 100 yards receiving and a touchdown.

David Cromwell led the MU rushing attack with 74 yards and Jamal Dallas added 67 yards.

Nick Yeager had seven tackles to set a new school single-season record with 82 while John Pearson and Mike Becke both added seven stops.

Alex Hafner and Garrett Murray had six tackles each and combined on a key goal-line fumble.

Joe Grasso and Ben Bard stopped Albright's fourth-down conversion attempt on the first drive of the game to give the Cougars the ball at their own 40.

Brady Williams hit Sam Gillison for nine yards on the right sideline that eventually set up a fourth-and-one.  Williams converted with a 28-yard scamper to the Albright 23.

Williams found Vleck wide-open down the right side on the next play to put MU ahead 7-0.

The Lions went for it on fourth down on their next possession, but Damian Diaz' near interception gave the Cougars the ball at their own 47.

On first down, Gillison took screen pass on the right side and cut back across the field for a 53-yard touchdown to give the Cougars a 13-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Albright threatened on its next drive after a 68-yard run set up a first and goal at the MU two.

After stops by Pearson and Yeager, Alex Hafner forced a fumble and Garrett Murray scooped it up and returned it to the MU 13.

Jamal Dallas picked up 18 yards on three carries to move the ball to the MU 27.

With Barry replacing Williams at quarterback, Gillison had a nine-yard catch for a first down across midfield.

Barry hit I. Williams for 29 yards to the Albright 34.

Vleck went off right tackle for a first down, but the drive stalled at the 15 and Matt Dinnocenti's 30-yard field goal made it 16-0 early in the second quarter.

Albright put together two scoring drives to get within 16-14 at halftime.

The teams traded punts to open the second half, but the Cougars put together an impressive scoring drive on their next possession.

Dallas ran for a 13-yard gain to set up a first down near midfield and Gillison's 25-yard reception set up a first-and-goal at the six.

Dallas picked up five yards on first down and Barry plunged in to cap a 79-yard drive to give MU a 23-14 lead.

MU forced a punt to take over at their own 17.

Dallas gained 21 yards on five carries and I. Williams had two catches for 29 yards to eventually set up a third-and-seven at the Albright 10.

Barry gained eight yards to set up first goal and connected with Vleck for a touchdown on fourth-and-goal to cap a 9:05 drive to make it 30-14 early in the fourth quarter.

Jason Anderson's sack on fourth down gave the ball back to the Cougars at their own 46.

On third-and-four, Barry avoided pressure, rolled right and hit I. Williams deep down the right sideline for a score and a 36-14 lead with 10:40 to play.

After an Albright touchdown, the Cougars answered with another lengthy scoring drive.

Cromwell picked up 66 yards on four carries, including a 48-yard run, to set up a first-and-goal.

The Cougars settled for a 31-yard field goal by Dinnocenti to take 39-22 lead with 4:12 remaining.

Albright added a touchdown in the final minute.

Misericordia will host Lycoming in their regular season finale, Saturday at noon.
