Rachel Carmody's huge day led the Misericordia University women's basketball team to an impressive 65-48 win at FDU-Florham, Saturday.
Carmody scored 23 points to reach 1,000 for her career and added a game-high 21 rebounds as the Cougars improved to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the MAC Freedom.
Jordan Barth added six points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks and two steals for the Cougars.
Carmody scored MU's first six points of the second half to put the Cougars ahead for good, 35-31, with 6:12 to go in the third quarter.
The Cougars took control of the game with an 8-0 run over the final 3:32 of the third quarter.
Carmody's layup followed by
Emma Hayes' short jumper in the lane gave the Cougars a 45-35 lead. Barth added a layup and a short jumper and the Cougars led 49-35 after three periods.
Erica Haefele made a three-pointer to open the fourth-quarter scoring and Carmody's layup stretched MU's lead to 54-35 with 7:35 to play.
Carmody reached the 1,000-point milestone with a short jumper in the lane to give the Cougars a 58-39 lead with 4:37 to go.
Misericordia got off to a quick start as Carmody's layup gave a MU a 10-5 lead midway through the first quarter.
Haefele's layup put the Cougars ahead 12-10, but the Devils went on an 11-0 run over the final 3:21 to take a 21-12 lead after one quarter.
The Cougars opened the second quarter with six straight points to get within 21-18.
Following a 7-0 spurt by the Devils, the Cougars ended the quarter on a 9-2 run, including a three-pointer at the buzzer by
Japriya Carroll to send the teams to intermission tied 29-29.
Carmody put the Cougars ahead 33-31 three minutes into the second half and they never looked back.
