Ninth Inning Rally Dooms Cougars

The Misericordia University baseball team suffered its second walk-off loss in less than a week with a 6-5 loss at King's, Wednesday.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and led throughout the game until the Monarchs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Tyler Holzapfel had two hits, including a solo homer, while Cole Bixler, Steve Weisensee and Chad Bell all drove in runs.

Elliot Forde scattered eight hits over seven innings while striking out four and allowing just three earned runs.

MU led 5-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth, but King's tied the score on a two-run double and won it on a single two batters later.

Misericordia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Parker Abate drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on Bixler's two-out single up the middle.

The Cougars made it 2-0 without a hit in the top of the third.  Abate and Bixler sandwiched hit by pitches award a walk by Holzapfel to load the bases before Steve Weisensee walked to force in a run.

After King's got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, the Cougars answered with a run in the top of the fifth.

Abate reached via hit by pitch to lead off and went to third on Holzapfel's single to right and scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.

Dalton Emerich led off the sixth inning with a single to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.  After moving to third on a wild pitch, Emerich came home on Bell's RBI-bunt single for a 4-1 lead.

King's scored in the bottom of the sixth and MU got it back in the top of the seventh on Holzapfel's solo homer down the right field line.

The Monarchs cut the MU lead to 5-3 on a two-out RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh.

Misericordia will host King's for a doubleheader, Thursday at 1:00 at Tambur Field.
