Hughes, Cougars "Walk" Off Over E-Town

Shane Hughes drew a bases-loaded walk to complete a four-run ninth inning rally as the Misericordia University baseball team beat Elizabethtown, 9-8, Wednesday in Fort Pierce, Florida.

Kenny Jarema had three hits and two RBI and Hughes had two hits and two RBI while Sean Boylan, Parker Abate and Chad Bell all had two hits each.

Ian McCole scattered seven hits over 6.2 innings to earn the win in relief.

Misericordia trailed 7-1 after five innings and rallied for two runs in the seventh and eighth innings before E-Town tacked on a run in the top of the ninth.

The Blue Jays scored twice in the second and third innings and the Cougars got one back in the bottom of the third.

Abate led off the bottom of the third with a single and moved to second on a single by Bell.  One out later, both runners moved up on a double steal and Abate scored on Hughes' double to center field.  Santo Guinta reached by hit by pitch, but the Cougars left the bases loaded.

After Elizabethtown scored three times in the top of the fifth, the Cougars rallied for two runs each in the seventh and eighth.

Hughes singled with two outs in the seventh and went to third on a single by Guinta.  Cole Bixler and Steve Weisensee followed with RBI-singles to get MU within 7-3.

Boylan opened the eighth with a walk, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a ground out.  Bell drove in a run with a single and Jarema followed with an RBI-double to make it 7-5.

The Blue Jays added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough.

Bixler led off the ninth with a walk and pinch-runner Dalton Emerich moved to third on a failed pick-off attempt.

Jonathan Juri reached on an infield error and Boylan drove in a run with a single.  Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Abate singled to make it 9-7.

Billy Kerwien was intentionally walked to load the bases and Jarema singled to drive in the tying run to set the stage for Hughes.

Misericordia, 5-2, will face LaRoche, Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
