Cougars Defeat PSU-Berks, Fall to Bridgewater

The Misericordia softball team earned a split down it Kissimmee, Florida, Thursday, defeating Penn State-Berks, 9-5, after falling to Bridgewater, 3-2, earlier in the day. The Cougars are now 4-6 on the season.

Against Berks, Ciara DeLong went 3-4 with the go-ahead three-run home run. Lori Brennan also went 3-4 with three RBIs and Abby Marzzacco went 3-5 with a run scored.

The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead, getting an RBI single from Brennan in the first inning who drove in Marzzacco who had singled earlier in the inning.

Misericordia added another run in the fourth on an RBI single from DeLong.

The Nittany Lions scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead, but the Cougars were able to answer back in the fifth with six runs of their own. Five of the first seven batters in the inning hit singles to tie the game at five before DeLong hit one over the fence to take the lead.

Brennan picked up her third RBI of the game in the sixth, knocking in Kiersten Pflueger for an insurance run.

Against Bridgewater, the Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Amanda Butera singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a stolen base and a passed ball. She came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Pluta.

The Eagles tied the game in the top of the second, but Misericordia was able to take the lead back in the bottom half of the inning. Pflueger led off the inning with a single and after stealing second and advancing to third on a single by Brooke Moyle, she scored on a fielder's choice by Marzzacco.

Bridgewater took the lead in the third, scoring two runs to go up 3-2. It turned out to be enough as they held on to win by that score.

The Cougars put a runner on third base in the third and fifth inning and a runner on second in the seventh, but were unable to push across the tying run.

Moyle went the distance in the circle, striking out three while allowing seven hits.

Misericordia will conclude their spring break trip tomorrow with two games, beginning with Emerson at 9:00 and followed by Rhodes at 11:15.
