Conor Smith played hero for the Misericordia baseball team as he hit a walk-off single to give the Cougars a 6-5 win over Delaware Valley, Wednesday afternoon in Doylestown.
Elliot Forde, who has been one of MU's best pitchers this season, had to hit in the ninth inning after the Cougars gave up their designated hitter earlier in the game. The senior came up clutch as he got his first career hit with a single to start the rally. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, he came around to score on the game-winning hit by Smith.
The Cougars finished off the sweep of the Aggies after winning the first two games on March 25 to improve to 18-7 and 8-2 in the MAC Freedom. Delaware Valley (7-11/2-4 MAC Freedom) was the home team for those games at Tambur Field as the Cougars were the home team today.
Santo Guinta led the Cougars on offense, hitting two home runs and collecting three RBI and two runs scored. Tyler Holzapfel also had two hits on the day, with a home run and, two RBI and two runs scored.
The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 in the first inning on an RBI double from Holzapfel and a two-run home run from Guinta.
The Aggies scored four runs in the third, but the Cougars responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on back-to-back home runs by Holzapfel and Guinta.
The score remained 5-4 until the ninth inning when Delaware Valley tied the game on an RBI double by Tom Crooks, leading to the heroics by Forde and Smith in the bottom of the ninth.
The Cougars is back in action, Friday when they host DeSales at 3:30.
